Museums celebrate.
Every year, up to three million visitors converge on Frankfurt to be part of the Museumsufer Festival ("Museum Embankment Festival"), one of Europe’s biggest cultural events. The three-day festival, which is held on the last weekend in August, celebrates the city’s so-called cultural mile – the many museums, art galleries and heritage centres lining both sides of the river Main. The packed programme includes live performances of music, theatre, dance and poetry, with stalls selling food, drinks and souvenirs from across the world. The twenty-plus institutions taking part stay open until late and many stage special exhibitions. Another highlight is the “Dragon Boat” race, which involves teams from various local businesses. The celebration ends with a huge firework display.
